There is enough fal-de-ral surrounding the British Open to preclude any comment here but I would ask the people who run the LPGA a couple of simple questions:
If not, why not? If so, what the hell were you smoking during the scheduling meetings? Here in Washington on our Sports Radio station, we have a guy named Phil Hawes on Saturday morning who does a golf show that redefines tedium for any context of the human experience. Phil also owns a golf store and so he is part huckster and part boring radio host - there is an exacta for you. Today whilst sitting in traffic on the Beltway, I heard him do a commercial for his golf shop and he said,
Te XFL named Dick Butkus as the coach of the Chicago team in the XFL. Now it is standard fare in rasslin for the bad guy's ring attendant/manager to assault the referee so that the bad guy can employ a "foreign object" to torture the opponent. Referee's in the XFL must wonder if Vince McMahon will be having coaches like Butkus "assaulting them" for calls that the coaches do not like. If so, the Chicago team has just inherited a very intimidating figure. In NFL news in Chicago, Bryan Harlan resigned last week and now it is revealed that he was involved with gambling with bookmakers in violation of the league gambling policy. Supposedly, he is involved in a Federal investigation and there was at least one person claiming that a source close to the investigation had Harlan betting on NFL games and Chicago Bears' games. That gets a bit close to home and it makes sense that he had to resign. Look for the NFL to overplay this into some rant about the evils of gambling and their attempts at purity within their sport. Were it not for the invention of the point spread to bet on football games and the ease of getting a bet down, NFL football would not be the juggernaut that it is in the sporting world. Mystery surrounds the reasons why Erik Williams has not reported to the Cowboys training camp. Some people say he wants to be traded; others say he is going to retire. Maybe he needs a bit more time to get down to the weight that he is supposed to report to camp with? The Reggie White Comeback Tour now seems destined for Seattle at the invitation of former Packer coach Mike Holmgren. As a situational player, Reggie could be very valuable to a team, but as a guy who is in for every snap, his time is over. Detroit signed Desmond Howard to a contract. They refer to him as a WR-KR.
Finally they say that good teams finds ways to win games. Well if the opposite is true, then conclude what you will about the Phillies who last nite found a way to lose a ball game that probably has happened before, but I can't recall it. In the bottom of the 9th, the pitcher uncorked two consecutive wild pitches to score the winning run. I wonder how he will like his new accommodations at the Reading Holiday Inn. But don't get me wrong, I love sports...
