On several occasions, I have said that Atlanta is not a good sports town. I am not about to turn that around but maybe there is a hint that the fans there are beginning to "get it". The Falcons' new owner did a survey on what kind of entertainment fans would want during or after Falcons' games. James Brown got 42% of the vote and if you are going to have an entertainer do a short gig, he is certainly better than lots of other choices. But the winner in the survey with 43% of the vote was something along the lines of: "Stuff the entertainment in a sack and just get out there and play football". That would be my vote. If I want music, I will go to a concert or turn on the radio. However, if the Falcons' new owner can find a way to have Elvis do a short gig…
Fans and people who call in to sports radio stations love quarterback controversies and they even manufacture some of them just for fun. However, there is real potential for a QB controversy in Cincy that is real and for which there may not be a clear-cut answer until the season starts. Facing off for the QB job are Gus Frerotte and Jon Kitna. OK, tell me who is the lesser of these two evils? Lots of folks are having fun with the announcement of Ryan Leaf's retirement. Here is a stat that tells you what a bust his career was:
Walter Payton threw 10 TD passes. The Golden State Warriors hired Eric Musselman as their new coach. This seems like a very good choice to me since Musselman has had lots of CBA experience and the Warriors are a good CBA team. Carl Everett has been unusually quiet this year on the field and off. However, he was approached by someone asking him how it felt to be temporarily benched and Everett issued one of his typical gracious remarks, "Anyone who says I can't play is pretty much an idiot." A quick check of my newspaper shows that Everett is flirting with the Mendoza Line when it comes to batting average and unless he raises that a whole lot when he does get back in the line-up, then maybe the "idiots" got one right. Minnesota Twins owner, Carl Polhad, is quoted as saying that he does not think there will be a baseball strike because "the players are too smart for that." No commentary needed for that one… I'm no handwriting expert and I have no way of judging if the signature on the note that purports to show that Ted Williams changed his mind about cremation and opted for cryonic preservation is a real signature or a forgery. But I am wondering about the story element that has grease stains and other "gunk" all over the document because John Henry Williams stored the note in the trunk of his car for a while and "stuff spilled on it". John Henry Williams was in charge of Ted's affairs and was the "business guy" in that enterprise. Now I'm supposed to believe that he kept important papers – remember this is the equivalent of a contract document without a monetary recompense paragraph – in the trunk of a car? Were there any other docs of a similar nature stored there and in similar condition with oil stains and car gunk on them? Hadn't he ever heard of this new invention called the safe deposit box? Matt Harrington was a first round pick of the Colorado Rockies two years ago. He turned down a $3.5M signing bonus from the Rockies and played for the St. Paul Saints in the independent Northern League and got released by the Saints. Last year, the Padres drafted him in the 2nd round and he turned down a $1.5M signing bonus and has been toiling in the independent Western League for the Long Beach Breakers. He was released from the Breakers and is now hooked on with the Fort Worth Cats in the independent Central League. I don't know who was advising Harrington regarding his contracts after he had been drafted before, but I suspect it is the same guy who was campaign director for Harold Stassen. The Dodgers sought bullpen help and traded for Paul Shuey. They had to give up two minor league pitchers and Terry Mulholland. For those who remember your algebra from high school, losing Mulholland is a plus. However there is a stat to consider here about Shuey. He came to the majors in 1994; that is 8 years ago. He has been on the DL 11 times. That is not the kind of "consistency" that I would be looking for. The following is from Scott Ostler in the San Francisco Chronicle:
Finally, the Buffalo Bills put QB, David Dinkins, on the "non-football injury list". So this is what happens to former mayors of NYC. I wonder whom Rudy Giulliani will sign with? But don't get me wrong, I love sports...
