Bruce Coslett resigned and has been replaced by Dick LeBeau in Cincy as the interim coach of the Bungles. There are so many things to say about this simple little action:
  1. Carl Pickens, you were right. Other than his willingness to "work cheap", why did Cincy rehire this guy last January?

  2. Why is Dick LeBeau "interim coach"? Because that way the Bungles can continue to pay him like an assistant coach and save money. And the dominant criterion for the next "real" head coach will be salary demands.

  3. Why did LeBeau take this job? He has to know this team well enough to realize that they are not going to go on a winning spree. I suspect that he sees this as a way to get into the "head coaches club" and to add one more item to his resume as a long term assistant coach/coordinator to give him a shot at coaching a real NFL team.

  4. In the Sunday game against the Ravens, the announcing team pointed out that some of the greatest tight ends in the history of the game were in the house. Ozzie Newsome (Ravens' GM), Shannon Sharpe, Ben Coates and Brent Jones (announcing team) were all there. So was Bruce Coslett whose mediocre playing career at tight end surpassed his sorry-assed coaching career.

  5. Is there something about tight ends than make them bad coaches? Remember, Richie Kotite was a tight end too. Then again, Ditka was a tight end. There is probably a PhD thesis in this analysis…

  6. As long as paying minimal salaries to everyone associated with the team and aggravating players with things like "loyalty clauses" in the contracts, this franchise will stay as a bottom feeder. Someday, it may even challenge the LA Clippers as the worst franchise in sports.
Michael Jordan made a trade of one bench warmer for another and it might work out to be an important move for the Wizards. They got Popeye Jones from Denver in exchange for Tracy Murray. Jones is a big tough rebounder and defender when he is healthy but has had injury problems for the last two years and he works hard. Those three things are sorely lacking on the Wizards and if Jones can come in and be himself without getting injured he just might have a positive effect on one other player and that would be important for this team of cream-puffs. In addition to getting this potentially positive force, the Wizards say good-bye to a streak shooting pouter who did not want to play here. And even if Murray goes to Denver and averages 15 points a game off the bench, there is a hidden number that ought to be associated with Murray in every game. He gives up points is gobs because he cannot - or will not - guard anyone. I believe that a fire hydrant could run the back-door play on him.

Indeed, Paul Pierce was the victim of a stabbing in Boston. As the story unfolds, Pierce was at a private party at the "Buzz Club" and a fight broke out and Pierce was hit over the head with a bottle and "stabbed multiple times in the face, neck, back and sternum." Police are looking for a single suspect. I suspect this story still has chapters to be written…

When Fusaichi Pegasus returned to the races on Saturday, he beat a small field of three year olds who are decent sorts but there were no stand-outs in the field. But when he ran a mile in 1:34 1/5 on a wet track at Belmont, you had to take some notice because that is a sound performance for any horse and this one had been away from racing since the middle of May. That race makes him a horse to consider come Breeders' Cup Day in November. And the Breeders' Cup races will be at Churchill Downs this year where Fusaichi Pegasus has already shown that he likes that track.

Remember I told you about the Howard University women's basketball coach who was fired and told not to trespass on the campus and that there would be more to this story? Well, yesterday she filed a suit against Howard University for $105 million. One thing about this woman, she does not think small! She claims her firing was a breach of contract, sex discrimination and retaliation against her for winning a big lawsuit against the university several years ago. The contract that was "breached" would have paid her $90K per year for the next three years so you have to add up a lot of mental anguish and other stuff to go from a property loss of $270K to a request for $105M. Oh, Howard has not yet hired a replacement women's basketball coach and practice begins in 3 weeks. But they have their eyes on someone …

Here is a big stat from the Giants/Redskins game. The Skins gained 13.5 yards per pass play; the Giants gained 3.9 yards per pass play. Not only is that a big difference but the Giants averaged more per running play than they did passing.

I expected the Colts/Jags game to be close and exciting. It wasn't either. Did the Jags miss their team bus? Were those stunt doubles out there? Jax looked flat in a game that should never have had them "flat"?

Steve Mariucci has a team that is on a fast track to nowhere but I have to applaud his decision to suspend Terrell Owens for a game after his juvenile behaviors (plural) on Sunday. Terrell Owens is hereby awarded the Bonehead of the Month Medallion.

Cryin' Greif will not play for the Chargers this weekend with a sprained wrist. Unfortunately, San Diego and Cincy do not play this year; what a treat that game would be.

It turns out that CJ Hunter tested positive in drug tests 4 times in the last year. Now people are speculating about what the effect will be on his wife, Marion Jones, in her quest for 5 gold medals. Unless there is evidence somewhere that Marion Jones has taken a "banned substance", then the only effect on her quest will be from people asking her repetitive questions that might distract her from her goals. What bothers me about this situation is that CJ Hunter is the current world record holder in the shotput and there is no outrage about his winning competitions with "drug assistance". Can anyone remember the tsunami of news reports and emoting about the horror of Ben Johnson cheating to win the Olympic Sprint medal? Well, why not the same outpouring about CJ?

The Phillies and Cubbies are going head to head in a series that could determine the MLB team with the worst record of the year. And tonight Omar Daal starts again trying to avoid losing his 20th game. This is the night for a promotion by the Cubbies as the home team. They should make the offer that the first nine fans through the turnstiles will be signed to one-day contracts and can start the game against the Phillies. What harm could come of that? These guys might even win.

Continuing to provide you with important Olympic results from the agate type, Cuba defeated Australia 26-24 in Men's Team Handball in a game to determine eleventh place in the competition. Can you imagine the adrenaline that was flowing and the electricity that was in the gym for that match?

But don't get me wrong, I love sports...
