I had the first part of my physical exam where they poke and probe and draw blood and all that stuff. Now I have a few moments to write and it will be brief today.

Bad news for the Cincy Bungles: Peter Warrick has only caught 16 passes in the 5 games this year for close to 200 yards. (It is not worth the few mouse-clicks it would take to get his exact yardage; it ain't a lot.)

Worse news for the Cincy Bungles: Warrick leads the team in receiving.

After a meeting with David Stern, Allen Iverson now says that he will modify some of the offensive lyrics in his rap album before it is released. Now that we have some level of closure on that, let me address those who say that Iverson's album is the same as John Rocker's intemperate remarks and the others who say that these events are not related. Rocker said in an impromptu interview setting a bunch of things that were outside the mainstream of US culture and values. Iverson "said" in his album which was scripted and rehearsed some things that were outside the mainstream of US culture and values. People who do not like what Rocker said claim that his extemporaneous remarks reveal his inner feelings. People who do not like Iverson claim that his scripted remarks reveal his inner feelings. And the judge's decision is:

No one is able - nor should they want to be able - to read the minds and hearts of these two clowns. Both said some hateful things. Maybe it is because they are both hateful people at their very cores; maybe it is because they did something stupid. Mencken once said that you should never ascribe to malice that which can equally be attributed to stupidity. I think Mencken saw this one coming.
Duke University - for the moment - is on the hook to pay Heather Sue Whoever $2M because she was cut from the football team and because the former football coach ran his mouth and told her things like she ought to get out of football and into beauty pageants. Some say this is a bad deal because she was really cut because she could not kick as well as other placekickers on the team. I saw videotape of her kicking once on George Michael's program and she was definitely "distance-challenged" for a Division 1-A kicker. But the verifiably inappropriate words of the coach are what got the University in hot water. Look for this to be settled before Duke appeals the judgment. Heather Sue should not take the chance that she gets $1 for all her legal effort; Duke does not need any more publicity on this issue.

Washington Post story this morning says that the Department of Justice has already spent over $1M (as of May 31, 2000) in its investigation of the Salt Lake City Olympics bribery scandal. I know these things take time and money and energy, but is this so critical that it is worth that kind of expenditure? Is anyone surprised that it happened? Is this such a heinous crime that it must be pursued to establish a lesson for all the children in the country not to do anything like it?

Meanwhile, in Charlotte, the Rae Carruth case proceeds along at its own pace. Hearings were held in Charlotte where "a number of motions" will be contested. In one of the more interesting ones, the "accomplice" who has plea bargained his case and agreed to testify for the state seems to have some interesting background issues that the defense wants to be part of the trial record. It seems that there are records that the defense claims will document this witness' threats to kill officers in the jail and that he is using anti-psychotic drugs. That kind of record cuts both ways. Maybe it can be used to say that his testimony is not as reliable as it could be. On the other hand, what was Rae Carruth doing driving around in a car with a goof like that in the first place. But then again, I'd never get selected for a jury doing a capital offense case…

In Philly, a former Temple football player has been arrested for involvement in the shooting of a fellow student outside a dorm. He has been charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit a weapons offense but not with shooting the gun. Evidently someone else was involved here. The victim was wounded in the arm and the butt. It may be difficult to convince a jury this was a self-inflicted set of wounds.

In his syndicated column, Norman Chad notes that the Falcons offense has not scored a TD in its last 26 possessions. He says that this breaks the previous American record held by George Costanza.

The Chargers have started Ryan Leaf and Moses Moreno and Jim Harbaugh at QB in the first 6 games. None of that has worked. So now they will play Harbaugh and Moreno each for a quarter in the first half of the game against the Broncos this Sunday. I have an idea. Play Junior Seau at QB for the second half. Could it be that much worse?

Rick Ankiel followed up his 5 wild-pitch performance against the Braves with two more in the first inning last night against the Mets. And there would have been more of them on the books but two happened while facing the first batter and so no WP is changed because no runner moved up. Technology needs to come to this guy's rescue. He needs a small radar in the bill of his cap so that he can find his catcher's glove. I would guess he has one more shot at throwing two consecutive strikes - other than a 70 mph straight ball which would probably go 70 miles in the opposite direction at great speed - before he is sent to Garlicbreath SD for a rehab assignment with the local team there.

The Mets claimed Desi Relaford off waivers from the Padres. They have Bordick; they will likely go after A-Rod. Now of those three names, which one does not belong?

A starting guard for the Maryland women's basketball team had knee surgery and will be out indefinitely. Her name is Vicki Brick. If you are a basketball player and your name is Brick, you really need to go and get it changed. Just like any male member of the Dover family who is named Ben needs to get his name changed…

Finally, Yale University - first university to win 800 football games - just named Dave Hainsworth as the men's volunteer hockey coach. If he volunteered, didn't he actually name himself?

But don't get me wrong, I love sports...
